Measurement of experimentally induced brain swelling and shrinkage.

چکیده
White et al. (I, 2) have measured changes in brain volume in cats by careful determinations of the volume of the brain and of the cranial cavity. The normal difference between these two volumes is about IO per cent and variation from this figure represents swelling or shrinkage of the brain. This method is difkult, and could hardly be applied after craniotomy. Assuming that changes in brain volume are due to changes in water content, and that the percentage of dry matter in the brains of normal animals is constant, then a difference from normal in the percentage dry weight of the brain of an experimental animal must be a measure of a change in volume. The swelling or shrinkage may be simply calculated without any need to determine the actual volume of the brain. If W and D are respectively the fresh and dry weight of the brain of a normal

Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase activity improves focal cerebral damage induced by cerebral ischemia/reperfusion in normotensive rats
Introduction: Nitric oxide seems to play a dual role in ischemia/reperfusion injury. Few studies have investigated whether it exacerbates or improves brain edema. In the present study, we inhibited the activity of nitric oxide synthase by L-NAME and evaluated the cerebral infarct volume, tissue swelling and brain edema, alongside the measurement of blood flow of the ischemic region. Methods...
متن کاملTwo different mechanisms underlie reversible, intrinsic optical signals in rat hippocampal slices.
Intrinsic optical signals (IOSs) induced by synaptic stimulation and moderate hypotonic swelling in brain tissue slices consist of reduced light scattering and are usually attributed to cell swelling. During spreading depression (SD), however, light-scattering increases even though SD has been shown to cause strong cell swelling. To understand this phenomenon, we recorded extracellular voltage,...
متن کاملMitochondrial Swelling Induced by Ca2+ and Inorganic Phosphate and Its Related Phenomena.
Some investigations have been done on the relationships between the swelling-shrinkage change, oxygen consumption and state of oxidation-reduction of pyridine nucleotides of mitochondria, and between the swelling-shrinkage change of mitochondrial structure by Ca2+ and accumlation of Ca45 in rat liver mitochondria. A parallel relationship is observed between the Ca2+ induced swelling and Ca2+ ac...
متن کاملL-Carnitine potentiates the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of diclofenac sodium in an experimentally induced knee osteoarthritis rat model
Objective(s): The aim of the present research is to investigate the efficacy of L-carnitine (LC) as a complementary therapy to diclofenac sodium (Dic) treatment in a mono-iodoacetate (MIA) induced knee osteoarthritis (OA) rat model, with respect to pain relief and the underlying pathology.Materials and Methods: Fifty adult male albino ra...
متن کاملAlkaline phosphatase activity in normal rodent brain and experimentally induced cerebral swelling.
Cerebral capillaries are known to be involved, at least in part, in the mechanism of the blood-brain barrier (BAKAY 1956), although the detailed mechanism is still obscure. On the other hand, it has been suggested that alkaline phosphatase participates in the permeability (HASHIMOTO 1961). It is of considerable interest to study whether or not alkaline phosphatase reveals any change in activity...
